Cookie Policy
Effective date: 1 January 2026 · A complete, itemised account of every cookie and browser storage item used by curiouslanebrowsing.lol, with instructions for switching them off.
1. What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store on your device. It can be read back on subsequent requests, which lets a site remember a preference, keep a session alive, or count a visit. Related technologies include local storage and session storage (key-value data kept in the browser, never automatically transmitted to a server), pixels, and software development kits. Throughout this policy we use "cookies" as shorthand for all of these.
Cookies are described as first-party when set by the domain you are visiting, and third-party when set by another domain whose content is embedded in the page. They are session cookies if they expire when you close your browser, and persistent if they survive until a stated expiry date.
2. Our position
This site is an editorial publication with no advertising, no user accounts and no commerce. We therefore run one of the smallest cookie footprints you will encounter. We set no advertising cookies, no cross-site tracking identifiers, no social media pixels and no fingerprinting scripts. Non-essential items are loaded only after you give affirmative consent through the banner, and refusing them removes nothing from the reading experience.
3. Essential cookies and storage
These are strictly necessary for the site to function and to remember your privacy choice. They are set without consent, as permitted by the ePrivacy rules implemented in Danish law.
| Name | Type | Provider | Purpose | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| cookieConsent | Local storage | First party | Records that you have made a consent decision so the banner does not reappear. | 12 months |
| cookieConsentDetail | Local storage | First party | Stores which categories you accepted, plus the timestamp, as proof of consent. | 12 months |
| __cf_sec | HTTP cookie | Hosting / CDN | Security, bot mitigation and rate limiting at the edge. | Session – 30 min |
| lb_route | HTTP cookie | Hosting | Load-balancer affinity so page requests are served consistently. | Session |
4. Analytics cookies (consent required)
These help us understand which entries are read, how far people scroll, and which devices we should test against. They are privacy-configured: IP addresses are truncated before storage, no cross-site profile is built, and no data is shared for advertising.
| Name | Type | Provider | Purpose | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| cl_session | HTTP cookie | Analytics processor | Distinguishes one visit from another in aggregate reporting. | 30 minutes |
| cl_visitor | HTTP cookie | Analytics processor | Estimates returning versus new readers without identifying anyone. | 13 months |
| cl_depth | Session storage | First party | Measures reading depth on long entries to guide article length. | Session |
5. Functional cookies (consent required)
These remember small preferences. They are convenience features only; the site works identically without them.
| Name | Type | Provider | Purpose | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| cl_currency | Local storage | First party | Remembers whether you prefer indicative rates shown in DKK or EUR. | 6 months |
| cl_saved_entries | Local storage | First party | Keeps a local shortlist of hotel entries you have marked while planning. | 6 months |
| cl_motion | Local storage | First party | Remembers if you have reduced the hero animation for accessibility. | 12 months |
6. Third-party embedded content
Two elements on this site load resources from other domains. Requesting any external resource discloses your IP address and user agent to its provider, which is inherent to how the web works:
- Photographic content delivery network — every hotel and article image is served from an image CDN. The provider may set its own operational cookies and logs the request.
- Map embed on the Contact page — an interactive map frame loads only when you open /contact. The map provider may set cookies governed by its own policy.
We do not embed social media widgets, comment systems, video players, chat tools, advertising tags or heat-mapping scripts anywhere on the site.
7. Managing your consent on this site
The consent banner appears on your first visit and offers three actions: Accept All, Reject Non-Essential and Preferences, which lets you enable analytics and functional categories individually. Your decision is saved locally and the banner will not reappear until it expires after twelve months or until you clear it.
To change your mind now, use the button below. This clears the stored decision and reloads the page so the banner reappears.
8. Browser-level opt-out instructions
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser. Note that blocking all cookies may affect other websites more than it affects this one.
Google Chrome (desktop)
Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies, or Settings → Privacy and security → Delete browsing data → tick "Cookies and other site data". To manage a single site: click the icon to the left of the address bar → Cookies and site data → Manage on-device site data.
Mozilla Firefox
Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Manage Data, or choose the "Strict" Enhanced Tracking Protection level. Firefox also offers "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed".
Apple Safari (macOS)
Safari → Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data → Remove All, and tick "Prevent cross-site tracking". Safari blocks most third-party cookies by default.
Safari (iOS / iPadOS)
Settings app → Safari → Clear History and Website Data, and enable "Prevent Cross-Site Tracking" under Privacy & Security.
Microsoft Edge
Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Manage and delete cookies and site data. Tracking prevention levels (Basic / Balanced / Strict) are under Settings → Privacy, search, and services.
Opera
Settings → Privacy & security → Cookies and other site data, then choose your blocking level or clear existing data.
Brave
Settings → Shields → Block cookies, plus per-site control from the Shields icon in the address bar.
Android Chrome
Chrome menu → Settings → Site settings → Cookies, or Settings → Privacy and security → Clear browsing data.
Most browsers also offer a private or incognito mode in which cookies and local storage are discarded when the window closes. Additionally, browsers that transmit a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal are honoured by this site as a valid opt-out of any non-essential processing.
9. Consequences of refusing
If you reject non-essential cookies, the site functions completely: every hotel entry, journal article, table and image loads as normal. You will lose only the optional conveniences — currency preference, saved shortlist and reduced-motion memory — and we will have less information about which pages are read, which affects our editorial planning but not your experience.
10. Updates to this policy
We audit the cookie inventory on this site every six months and whenever we change a technical component. If a new item is introduced, this table will be updated before it goes live and, where consent is required, the banner will be re-presented. The effective date at the top of the page reflects the current version.
